What Is Relationship Obsessive‑Compulsive Disorder (ROCD)?

ROCD is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that focuses on romantic relationships. If you have ROCD, you may experience unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) about your relationship or partner, such as:

  • “Is my partner really the right person for me?”

  • “Are they attractive/smart/funny enough?”

  • “Do I truly love them, or am I lying to myself?”

  • “Is our relationship good enough compared to other couples?”

These thoughts are unwanted, intrusive, and repetitive. To cope, you may find yourself doing compulsive behaviors such as:

  • Constantly asking your partner or friends if the relationship is “okay”

  • Comparing your relationship to others, online or in real life

  • Checking your feelings (“Do I feel in love right now?”) over and over

  • Avoiding situations—like romantic movies or double dates—that trigger doubts

Over time, ROCD can cause significant distress and interfere with your daily life and your ability to feel present in the relationship.
